During the 1970-71 school year, the varsity soccer team achieved a record of 21 wins, 5 losses and 3 ties against schools often 10 to 20 times the size of St. Joe’s, which at the time had only 118 students. Along the way, the Bruins team defeated a host of Catholic and public high school powerhouses that included Bellarmine, St. Francis, Sacred Heart, Saratoga, Los Altos, Dublin, Mountain View and Andrew Hill. Blessed with a mix of speed up front and in the back, skilled midfielders who controlled the game, tough defense and aggressive goalkeeping, St. Joe’s scored 68 goals and allowed only 32 goals in 29 games. The team also won a four-team playoff to become regional champions and earn a spot as an independent school in the Central Coast Section playoffs. At CCS, St. Joe’s competed against a group of seven league champs, and ended up finishing in 3rd place as the Consolation Champions.
